Some of you may know that Sally and I mentored a refugee family who originated in Somalia. This family was granted resettlement by the United Nations in an alli country, that being the US. A KC agency selected their case file to resettle them here. Along the way we discovered a host of issues that must be crossed for them to be capable of independent living. A decade of dependency on the UN in a refugee camp cannot be turned around in the 4 months that the US provides assistance for. Food stamps remain but they have to learn quickly how to fend for themselves.
To SEE what I mean, you must go here - The Refugee Syndrome Film. It's about a 25 min film and gives a great introduction into these issues. The cool thing is, you can make a difference right here in KC by mentoring families like these through the agencies of Jewish Vocational Services (MO) or Catholic Charities (KS).
